Gibbons Park Montessori School Code of Ethics
I. Commitments to the student:

Confidentiality
The Educator shall:

  1. Keep all personal information about children and families, organizational problems, and individual faculty matters in strict confidence. All records, files, conversations and conferences are held for the benefit of the child and are strictly confidential.

Respect for the Child

The Educator shall:

  1. Portray a positive, optimistic attitude about children,
  2. Show a cooperative spirit,
  3. Nurture the child’s independence and recognize the unique individuality of every child.
  4. Demonstrate trust in the child’s work, and desire to follow the child.
  5. Avoid pride and anger. This includes: never speaking ill of the child, avoiding sarcasm, teasing, over-reaction to misbehaviour, and implied reward and punishment.
  6. Be sensitive to the child's desire to be held or touched.
  7. Respect the rights of the child in their prepared environment allowing for       the optimum development of the young casa child and the older elementary child.

II. Commitment to the School Environment
Preparation of the Environment:
The Educator shall:

  1. Develop a complete Montessori program for the children in their care.
  2. Care for this environment including animals, plants, and Montessori materials.
  3. Initiate change in order to provide new stimulation.
  4. Ensure that the outdoor and after school environments are consistent with Montessori principles and philosophy used in the classrooms.

III. Commitment to the Community
Parent Education
The Educator shall:

  1. Recognize that parents are our partners. They are their child’s first teacher and should be respected as such.
  2. Share with the parents the Montessori principles and familiarize them with the classroom materials and routines.
  3. Include parents in the day to day life of their children through written and verbal communications regularly.

Community Responsibilities
The Educator shall:

  1. Attend all meetings, gatherings, information sessions etc. which support parent education of Montessori and that contribute to community morale building and involvement.

IV.Commitment to the Profession
Professional Improvement
The Educator shall:
1. Upgrade skills, participate in Montessori workshops, keep abreast of current educational developments, and open-mindedly seek ways to improve teaching techniques and the classroom environment.

Problem Solving
The Educator shall:

  1. Actively attempt to solve problems by discussing problems with the person who can make the change that is needed or seeking reasons why the change cannot be made.
  2. Make clear, direct, non-apologetic statements about his/her expectations and feelings.
  3. Criticize in a descriptive, rather than a judgmental way.
  4. Persist in following through on issues even if she/he meets resistance.
  5. Listen to others’ views respectfully, and negotiates and compromises.

Good Staff Relations
The Educator shall:

  1. Work and socialize cooperatively.
  2. Remain non-judgmental of staff.
  3. Demonstrate trust and respect.
  4. Maximize communication through staff meetings, celebrating holiday events, mutual program support and sharing, and school-wide projects.
  5. Malicious gossip and other harmful behaviours should be ignored and suppressed. They will not be tolerated.

Professional Conduct
The Educator shall:

  1. In addition to teaching responsibilities, share responsibilities of lunchtime and playground supervision.
  2. Keep private affairs outside of the workplace.
  3. Maintain agreements at all levels regarding performance of duties, being sensitive to the needs of individual children and staff, directing concerns to the appropriate party, abiding by the regulations and policies of the school, and supporting the mission of Gibbons Park Montessori School.
